About the Course
We are thrilled to present this course to you, which will combine the expertise of three of our colleagues: Juliana Schulze Burti (Brazil), Alana Devlin (Canada) and Katie Kelly (Canada), to provide you with evidence-based fundamental information and skill-based practical applications with this special population.
This is a synchronous online course, to be held over 4, five-hour sessions.

Course Objectives
- Describe the anatomical and physiological changes during the perinatal period.
- Know the special considerations and differential diagnosis for the pregnant and postpartum population.
- Be able to practice a musculoskeletal evaluation and to apply a practical treament specific to the pregnant and postpartum population, specifically for diastasis, pelvic girdle pain and other common musculoskeletal complaints.
- explain perineal and specific pelvic floor considerations in scar tissue assessment, intervention and prevention strategies.
- Describe exercise considerations, biomechanics and wellness in pregnancy and the postpartum period.
- Possess strategies to support maternal knowledge during pregnancy, labor and optimal care in this specific population.
- Explain the phases of labour. Be able to detect and recognize labour. Define the types of labour pain.
- Be able to use biomechanics to assist labour and delivery. Describe non-pharmacological pain management or labour and delivery.
- Provide an exercise prescription for different stages of childbirth.

Your Instructors:
Juliana graduated in Physiotherapy and Physical Education. PhD in Social Psychology Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo. Master in Health Sciences by the Department of Female Voiding Dysfunctions – Urology at Federal University of São Paulo. Professor at Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo -Physiotherapy. Continuing education in Exercise Physiology at Federal University of São Paulo. Continuing education in Lifestyle Medicine – Albert Einstein Hospital. Certificate in Dysfunctions and Pelvic Floor Reeducation. Certificate in Pelvic Floor Electromyography/Biofeedback. Update on Gerontology – Clinical Hospital of University of São Paulo.
Juliana Schulze Burti
Alana obtained her Bachelor of Medical Rehabilitation in Physiotherapy from the University of Manitoba in 1996. Shortly after moving to Calgary in 1999, she attained her certification to practice anatomical acupuncture through the Acupuncture Foundation of Canada. She went on to become a certified manipulative therapist in 2002 and began to pursue further advanced training in her passion for women’s health. She has engaged in advanced training throughout Canada and the US and is a certified practitioner of Röst therapy, specifically aimed at pregnancy-related pelvic girdle pain. In 2018 and 2019, Alana successfully obtained the certificate of achievement in pregnancy/postpartum physical therapy as well as the certificate of achievement in pelvic physical therapy through the American Physical Therapy Association. Alana has recently completed her Doctoral degree in physical therapy. Alana is fortunate to work in close alliance with gynecology and urogynecology and has much experience in pre-and post-operative treatment for gynecological and surgical interventions.
Alana Devlin
Katie has been practicing as a women’s health and pelvic floor physiotherapist since 2010. She is the owner/operator of her practise, Katie Kelly Physiotherapy, in Moncton, NB. Katie is often a guest lecturer for the school of Physiotherapy at Dalhousie University on the topics of the role of physiotherapy in pregnancy, pelvic floor and exercise for obesity and weight management. She is an active contributing author to the Canadian Physiotherapy Association’s Women’s Health Division Newsletter. Katie has formed a relationship with Mount Allison University’s Sexual Health Laboratory to research chronic pelvic and genital pain conditions. She received both her BSc and MSc in Physiotherapy from Dalhousie University, is a member of the New Brunswick College of Physiotherapists, the Canadian Physiotherapy Association’s Women’s Health Division, the Canadian Sex Researcher Forum and the Canadian Obesity Network. Katie’s overwhelming curiosity for pelvic health physiotherapy drives her to continuously take deep dives into topics of interest.
